Friday morning update from Karen (Larry's sister)

More good news ...

Yesterday morning Larry was looking like a complete invalid; today he's

very agitated, wants to take control, leave the hospital, disconnect the

wires and tubes, and go teach a kayaking class. Unfortunately for the

nursing staff and family (Janell), he doesn't trust anybody right now and

questions everything the nurses do, but he's still Larry and being very

diplomatic (as a smart ass doctor-patient, Janell says). He's been trying

to get up all morning; wants to put his pants on (gone ... cut off), wants

to get his car, needs to teach a class this afternoon.

Physically, he's progressing in great strides. Mentally, he's angry and

doesn't understand why no one will help him get up and go -- "I know what

I'm doing." Nurses say that's normal, but be ready for the rehab experience

and dealing with the short term memory lapses that may continue for however

long it takes.

His two main doctors have to release him for travel. Janell has a team

lined up and waiting at the BR General, but the lead doctors (here and

there) have to talk to each other. Acadian Ambulance is waiting for the

word to send a plane; the General is holding a room but wishing he could

come fill it soon since there seems to be a run on rooms all over. In the

last 36 hours Janell hasn't see anyone doctor-type who can make those sorts

of decisions, which is a drag. 'Sounds like it's time to move him west ..

to Baton Rouge. But she's certainly trying. He sounds like he's certainly

trying, too, but not in the same way. (Sorry -- I couldn't resist, it's so

nice to hear he can fight still/again.)

That's it for today. Janell said she'd let us know when/if they're homeward

bound. May be a while just to make the connections.

Happy Day.

Love,

Karen
