Use a hair dryer or heat gun.  Works fine.  Work slowly and you won't have a 
lot of gunk to clean off as a second phase.  You'll have some, no matter what 
you do.  Try alcohol, and if that doesn't do it, work up to a heavy duty 
commercial adhesive remover.  Hardware stores will have that.  Goof-Off works 
well, too, but wipe it up right away.
