There is nothing better overall than PaddleWise but there are different ones
around meeting specialized purposes. Some are local; CPAkayaker
(Chesapeake) and NYCkayaker come immediately to mind. These locals, open to
anyone, are more for local contacts and trips but often have lively
discussions a la PaddleWise. Also some clubs have listserves; Bay Area Sea
Kayakers for example has one but you can only get on it if you are a member;
but if you need Bay info or contacts, just post on PaddleWise and someone
will cross post it for you on BUZZ, the BASK listserve. Then there are
specialized ones that have been around for awhile such as for boatbuilding
or the emerging one mentioned here for folding kayaks. Beyond this you will
also find that some manufacturers have excellent bulletin boards. Folbot's
is one such example devoted to Folbot owner needs. To a lesser degree you
will find boards, still in a fledgling stage, for the magazines...Canoe &
Kayak has one.

But PaddleWise still remains THE treasure trove of information. I can't
keep count of the many times when I have learned things of value in its
messages. The level of discussion here often beats that of the magazines,
even Sea Kayaker, largely because there are some very informed characters
(our "characters" give zestful flavor...Matt, Lloyd, etc.) who freely
exchange ideas in the open. So you get a lot to pick from and not just one
view. (I'm reminded of my days working at an international business
reporting and forecasting company. One wag among our clients once commented
that anytime he needed a variety or range of forecasts for a country he just
called different people at our company!)
