This radio is selling at reduced prices these days because Standard-Horizon has a newer model at the old price point. The new model is the HX 460. It has all the bells and whistles of the 350, comes with AC and DC chargers, but it's about 1/2 the size. It's roughtly the size of a pack of cigarettes, and can easily fit into a pfd pocket with the antenna sticking out the top. It also has lithium batteries instead of Ni-cad. I bought a 460 a couple of weeks ago to use both paddling and on my sailboat as a supplement to the fixed mount 25w radio w/ masthead antenna. This weekend sailing, sitting in my sailboat cockpit with the antenna approx 5-6' above the water, I got a reply to a request for a radio check from about 5 miles away. The radio was set to transmit at 5w. When I tried again at 1w, I couldn't reach anyone else within range. Then I tried the fixed mount radio transmitting at 1w, and I was able to reach the same boat 5 miles away. The fixed mount radio uses a 3' whip antenna mounted on the masthead approx 40' from the water. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
