G'Day, Have just read Derek Hutchinson's book on expedition kayaking in which he describes the situation of a paddle breaking while rolling. Last month a mate of mine achieved just this. We were in shallow water practising, but what if we were not? Every spare paddle system I've seen looks as though it would be difficult to access without assistance, while in the boat. And there isn't much in the literature. Ironically our sea proficiency exam insists on a spare paddle but has no requirement to demonstrate beng able to deploy it while paddling! I even heard one suggestion that spare paddles should be stored inside the kayak. I'm working on a rear deck bag stowage method but would be grateful for descriptions of stowage and ways of deploying the paddle. My friend was still able to paddle faster than me, in an identical boat, using only one paddle! Maybe thats the answer - just use one paddle! All the best, PeterO *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
