There are still some spots available for the Bay Area Sea Kayakers’ Navigation clinic with David Burch, author of the kayaker's bible/torah/koran the "Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation, " and the leading authority on kayak navigation. Mr. Burch will be visiting us from Seattle where he is the founder and director of the Starpath School of Navigation. He will lead an intensive two day, 12 hour classroom course that will focus not only on the fundamentals of navigation, but also applying those fundamentals to everyday use on the water to make you a more effective and safer paddler. The course includes position navigation, charts, chart reading and chart plotting, use of GPS, compass use and what affects it, speed, time and distance measurement and affects upon them, natural ranges, bearing fixes, tides and currents including reading the water, measuring currents underway, and crossing currents, wave dynamics and practical marine weather. The classroom sessions will be at University of California San Francisco campus on Saturday and Sunday April 21 and 22. Two weeks later, Friday evening May 4 to Sunday May 6 we will have an informal on the water weekend (without David Burch) at Tomales Bay to put to practical use some of what we learned. Camping is at the group campsite at Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Potluck Saturday night, it should be a party! The cost is $95 ($90 if you provide a current American Canoe Association membership number) for both weekends.
