I also thought the paddle as a grounding device sounded very strange, and Tom Joyce wrote down one very good reason not to try it out. I also have a second comment: if the wind is strong, is one even able to hold a paddle in that position? Propably not. Hoping we all will enjoy only good paddling weather next summer... Anyways, the discussion seems to point out, that the risk of getting hit by a lightning is quite minimal. Good for us!
