I use one. I like to take photographs while kayaking and I like to know the paddle won't float away while I'm shooting, or fumbling around getting the weather radio, a drink, or any of the many other things which require both hands. The construction of mine is a coiled bungy cord, kinda like a telephone cord. It attaches to the deck rigging by a snap fastener and to the paddle by a Velcro strap. Either end can be removed in seconds. It never gets in the way when paddling but I have never tried to roll with it attached so I'm not aware of any potential problems in that area. With the price of paddles in the $200 to $300 range, I'd hate to lose one. The tether cost about $12 as I recall. Cheap insurance!
