    I do not think you can be safe for $350.  Five hundred, and even fifty
yards is a long way to swim in cold water.  That is true under ideal
conditions, eg., no wind, not towing gear, and non - drag clothing.  A bomb
proof roll is no substitute for the clothing you need if the bomb is bigger
than you expected.   


    At 40 to 50 degrees, I  would think that a complete drysuit is required,
but, at the least, a dry top.  A used one might be within your budget.   At 50
+ degrees you *might* get away with a wetsuit, if you are not too sensitive to
cold


    I can not use pogies, so I use plain fleece gloves.  These have been
better than neoprene, and very adequate in water - air temperature
combinations down to 37 degrees water and 40 degrees air.  


    Pile under garments are a must.  The second hand shops are usually full of
these.
