--------------------
Northeast Skinboat Gathering 2001

June 2 & 3, 2000 Chatham, Massachusetts (Cape Cod), USA.
The eighth annual Gathering is for all owners, builders and people
interested in handbuilt traditional or traditionally inspired manually
powered watercraft (umiaks, baidarkas, greenland style kayaks, corracles...)

This is a non-commercial gathering of interested people. There will be a
number of hand built boats on display and an opportunity to talk with
builders, and with their permission, try out different types of boats.

This event is very freeform and primarily a chance to get together with
other skin/frame boaters. Saturday is usually spent meeting other
attendees, chatting and trying boats, paddles, etc.. On Sunday there is
usually at least one group paddle, this year we are planning to paddle
around Woods Hole. Tentatively we have a local guide, which would allow us
to lunch on a private island.

June is a wonderful time for the Cape. Before the crowds and after
everything opens. The prices are better and lodging readily available.
There are unlimited activities for the family and the kids, good
restaurants and a variety of accommodations all fairly close to the
Gathering site.

LODGING
There are many motels, hotels, and Bed and Breakfast accommodations
available in the area. Chatham tends to be pricey, but Orleans, Harwich,
and Brewster are close by. We do emphasize that if you want lodging
accommodations, that you must reserve it on your own.

There are campsites available on the Cape. Nickerson State Park is
convenient and has a large number of campsites. (508)896-3491 or

Privately owned camping areas are available, but they are further away.
Check with the Chamber of Commerce. We do emphasize that if you want your
own campsite, that you must reserve it on your own.

WEATHER AND PADDLING CONDITIONS
The water is normally warm and good for swimming in June.
The Gathering will be held at the south end of Pleasant, just off route 28,
on the Harwich/Chatham line. Please be aware that Harwich wraps all the
way around Chatham, Pleasant Bay is on the Orleans (outer cape) side of
Chatham.

 DIRECTIONS:
You are on your own to get to Cape Cod.

Once you cross over the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 head out onto the Cape.
Get off route 6 at Exit 11, route 137,and head toward Chatham (left at the
end of the ramp). About 50 yards from route 6, take the first left onto
pleasant bay road follow that road for several miles, you will cross Route
39. When you come to the end of that road you will intersect route 28 at a
horrible intersection. Go right onto route 28 (the signs say North). As
you head toward Chatham, along Route 28, you will go along pleasant bay, at
the south end of the bay the route 28 heads up a hill. About 1/3 of the
way of the hill the guard rail on the left ends. Just beyond the end of
the guard rail take the small dirt road down the hill. The Saturday
gathering will be down the hill along the beach. From route 28 all sorts
of small sailboats and Hobie cats are visible pulled up on the beach near
the gathering.

There is no registration or parking fee for this event. A small donation
would be helpful to defray costs but it is entirely voluntary.
