Hey John - RE: the type of bow lift in which there's a rescuer and a "victim" - The way I learned this rescue is closer to the way Ray Killen's friend describes it, and it seems even easier to me - and there's less chance of mangling the rescuer's deck. As you know, I am not a strong person, but this rescue is easy for me to do even "in conditions". With the victim's boat right side up and at right angles to the rescuer's boat, the vic can go anywhere she/he is comfortable. Best, of course, would be to the back of her/his boat. The resucer then can grab the bow of the vic's boat and rock his/her boat toward the vic's boat. Then the rescuer rocks his boat away from the vic's boat while lifting and pulling the vic's bow up over the rescuer's deck. I was surprised at how little strength it takes to do this, even with a victim's boat fairly well flooded with water. If the vic's boat doesn't come as far across the rescuer's deck as needed, the rocking-pulling maneuver can be repeated once or twice - but that's rarely necessary. As you know, you don't have to get the vic's boat very far up to turn it over (I prefer to turn it toward me, but I know that risks cutting into the spray deck - some others like to turn the boat away from them, which requires a bit more strength) and empty out the water. I haven't paddled this winter, but it's getting warmer each week. Time to grease up the paddles. - Bill Hansen <<The swimmer then reaches across and grabs the bow toggle on their boat and places both feet on the side of the rescuers boat just in front of the cockpit. >> *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
