Over the weekend I helped work at the ANorAK both at paddle sports
2001 held in N.J. After walk around on Friday I thought the the
vendor turn out was poor at best. It's sad that a paddling area as
rich in people and $$$ as this area has such a poor show. Many of the
vendors didn't even bring there 2001 boats and gear because the
Jersey paddle wasn't going to carry it. I guess that's fine but then
you shouldn't have to pay to see what's going to be in the store.
It's like paying to go into a car dealership during a sale.

Ralph Hoehn: That's too bad, because it appeared last year that Paddle Sports was a good show, at which both the vendors and the visitors were highly motivated.

I have to say that this year I noticed that there seemed little interest on the part of the organizers to attract / motivate participants (I was at one point considering our own commercial participation). I had not given it further thought until Joe's message.

On the other hand the much smaller, but bursting-at-the-seams Small Boat Shop show in Norwalk CT the previous weekend appeared to go down well both with the participants and with the (paying!) public. I was truly impressed with the level of knowledge, experience and deep thinking interest displayed by the visitors of that show!! (Yes, I did participate in this one.)

And let's be fair: Describing vendor turn-out as "poor" reflects mostly the potential commercial gain that a vendor can expect from participation. If the show is structured and / or timed in such a way that the potential gain is worth the effort, you can expect vendors to make a "better" show.

Best regards,
Ralph C. Hoehn
