Not many details. I just got off the phone with my wife, who read a short
obituary to me from this mornings paper. Here's what I have....

This guy lived in Poquoson, VA - my home town of only 15,000 residents (but
boarders an area with 1/2 million)
Name - Garland Reese
Age - 49
Member of Colonial Canoeist Club
Was the clubs president for 3 years, and the Trip Master
Was an Expert Certified Instructor (not sure how that relates to the BCS
ratings, etc)
Died this past Friday in a kayaking accident in Richmond (no big lakes in
that area, but some WW, so I suspect he was WWing)

If I get a chance this morning, I'll go on-line and check the Richmond Times
to see if I can find an article.

Richmond has a whitewater play spot (several, actually) located right
around downtown on the James River. Parts of it are pretty benign, but
there's also a section with rebar and other debris in it that it's a pretty
good idea to avoid. However, the local paddlers seem to have a pretty
exhaustive and detailed knowledge of this, and so it's hard for me
to imagine that any of them would be there deliberately.

A man kayaking in the James River near Belle Island fell out of his kayak
and apparently drowned Friday. Police identified him as Garland Reece,
49, believed to have been from the Tidewater area.
Reece fell into the water about 5:20 p.m. and was pulled out a short time
later, police said. He was taken to Virginia Commonwealth University's
Medical College of Virginia Hospitals where he was pronounced dead,
police said.
