My wife has been searching all day for one of the burner covers from
the kitchen stove (it is temporarily replacing the third VCP cover on
my Seda Glider).

Does anyone know if VCP or any other firm is producing a superior
product - one that doesn't have to be replaced every year or so? Joe

Most folks including myself find them to work well, either way I
don't know anyone making replacement for VCP hatches other then VCP.
Are you putting a UV protectant like 303.

My VCP hatch cover id going into its fourth season looking -- at this
point -- like it will last at least another one. No one who knows me would
accuse me of pampering my boat, but I do regularly wipe the hatch covers
with '303'. Seems to help.

I know your problem and I got the solution, or a maybe-solution.

VCP hatches had been for quite a long time the first choice. Functional and
waterproof enough. I was told they got 80 per cent of the world market, but
Valley rest on their success and a few years ago (6 or 7, ??) Kayaksport OY
from Finland and Lettmann from germany work together and build a new cover,
which is replacing now VCP hatches worldwide. VCP hatches are made from PU
or something else (polyurethane) and this material suffers from UV-radiation
and ozone. KS-OY hatches are made from rubber. You have the choise between
round hatches of
10, 20, 24 cm (2,54 cm = 1 inch) and the oval 42x30 cm one. (all inner
diametres)
Their edges fit better than the VCP egdes to the hatch-frame. The rubber is
more watertight and flexible, even under cold conditions. Each hatch got to
"nipples" (inside and outside) with a hole, so you can knot a rope to it.
The outer "nipple" makes it easier to open the hatch, and the inner one is
ideal to fix the hatch to the boat, so you canīt loose the hatch by mistake!

But the best is the price and the dimensions. The VCP round hatch got an
inner diametre from 19cm and outer is exactly the same like the 20cm
hatch-frame from KS-OY. o can change them. The price of hatch + frame is
much lower then the single VCP hatch (Without frame) !!! I think thatīs the
reason why most producers chnage their forms.
My Sirius still got the VCP hatches, because I havnīt had the choice several
years ago, but my Artisan and Spitzbergen got the KS-OY hatches and I love
them. I even got the small 10cm hatch, it is ideal for the very end of a
long boat, so you can get out and in small things and place them more
exactly in the boat.

2 Problems they still got. First is when they are nex, then it is hard work
to open them. Then you use some vaseline or silicon spray. 2nd is, you could
make more personal mistakes. One time I close the round hatch and the little
rope comes under the hatch. Afterwards I wonder where the few water had come
in. So you have to pay more attention on this system, but thats nothing,
compared with the good aspects.

Hope this might be a help for you.
bye
Jochen

Just forgotten one point.

For my VCP hatches I couldnīt change into KS-OY ones, Iīve build last autumn
a kind of spray-covers against the UV-radiation. I took some
spinnaker-stuff-material (very thin cloth) and cut it round (or oval)
shaped. Sew a round tunnel for a thin and strong rope. Than a place the
cover over the hatches and fasten it with the rope, running through the
groove (of the hatch). The cover fits the hatch exactly and you could give
your boring black hatches some coloured effects, too. I hope the covers will
protect the hatches against the UV-radiation, if not - it was a try.
For the oval hatch I will sew a little bag on the cover, so I could place
there some stuff, like a lamp, signal flares, trail rope ... in it.

I offer this idea to some dealers and the Valley dealer. But the market
denied a need. For sure, they like to sell new hatches every 2 years!

all the best
Jochen G.

John,

What does using a emoticon have to do with anything?

I simply stated the fact that I happen have exactly what someone requested.
In a timely fashion.

Basically just an answer to a posted question.

BTW, now quite a few people know where they might find a VCP hatch, asap.
Isn't this valuable information?

I could post from my home account, without the sig, if this will make you
happy.

Good question. Since you used one both times it looked like you knowingly
violated the list policy but because an emoticon was added it somehow made
it okay.

Perhaps to the person that asked the question. I don't know how many
subscribers there are on Paddlewise now but I would be willing to guess
that the overwhelming majority of them have no need for a VCP hatch cover
and you're answer is nothing more than unsolicited commercial advertising.
I could probably find a half dozen vendors with a simple web search where
one could buy a VCP hatch cover. If every vendor that sold VCP hatch
covers simply responded to the simple question it would clutter up the list
pretty fast. If someone asked a simple question about Perception kayaks,
Paddlewise would become almost unusable if every vendor that sold
Perception kayaks decided to subscribe to the list and respond to every
query about Perception kayaks with an indication regarding stock availability.

Whether that would make me happy is irrelevant. The fact is (from the
welcome message when you subscribed to Paddlewise):

* Commercial promotion and advertising is not allowed. However, a simple
four-line by-line in your signature stating the name of your business and
contact information is generally acceptable.

Answering a question about equipment and including all of the subscribers
on the list , rather that just responding to the person that asked for the
information, is, in my opinion, commercial promotion and advertising, and
thus is in violation of the listserv policy.

John,

I'm almost always in agreement with you, but this time I do disagree. The
original poster was asking where he could get the hatch cover quickly.

Steve at Alder Creek did answer that. Perhaps it should have been done back
channel direct to the original poster--but the request was to the list and a
simple answer was given.

There was no advertising to the effect of "We also carry......and
........and are offering the following specials........."

Just my 2 cents,

Steve Holtzman

big snip.........you're answer is nothing more than unsolicited commercial
advertising.

Steve's emoticon # 1

I have one ready for instant delivery if you need one asap.
;-)

Paddler was not happy with his local dealer and was loosing faith in his
ability to get a skirt from said dealer. I went to the trouble of grabbing
a couple skirts and fitting them on the Scirroco, determining which was the
best option. My wink was to say I hate to barge in on your local dealer
dude, but I happen to have one right here that I might make a paddler happy,
by shipping asap.

Emoticon # 2

Is that timely enough?? =:-o)

As in: WOW, timeliness could be as soon as physically possible.

steve
