I thought that I'd rewrite my question.  I'm making my kayak andI'm not
too concerned about cosmetic appearances and figured I'd shed off a bit
of weight by losing the gel coat on the deck.  I did a test piece and
repeatedly stabbed it with a knife and it barely made a mark.  If I did
that to gel coat it would have made an ugly mess.  My only concern is
that I know that Kevlar is more sensitive than other products to UV rays
and I'm wondering if tinted resin with UV protection additive is enough
protection.    - Bill Crane

Someone recently posted concerning weight of new kayaks.  I just got mine
and the weight -- 54 pounds (no skeg or compass; day hatch) -- is per specs.

Shoild be enough Bill. UV rays aren´t X-Rays. They´ll stop just at the first
frontier on your boat.
