Ralph, I have the ISK night navigation trip for the last two years. I have
used light sticks, LED lights and Krill lights as well translucent cones
over regular flashlights. Our legal lighting for this inland water trip
were flashlights on each boat to be used for emergency use only.

As trip leader last year I had two colors of lights on my back. One green
and one red. Other paddlers had single color lights. My sweep said he
appreciated the dual color lights on my back so he could, at a glance,
distinguish me from the rest of the group.

The light sticks, LED illuminated cones and Krill lights were low enough
intensity that night vision was not disturbed. The regular flashlight
illuminated cones were too bright, reducing the night vision of following
paddlers.

I like the idea of moving lights on the paddle, since moving or flashing
lights are much easier to find and flashing lights are not allowed except as
emergency beacons.

I have been experimenting with LED Infintity lights in a homemade light
stick. Blue, red and green are the colors I thought were the brightest and
easiest to distinguish from distant white lights.

For a just in case light, here in MN, I would stick with a AA powered
flashlight as a warning light. I might also carry a red or green LED light
as a compass illuminating light.
