The Lago Maggiore is supposed to be very nice paddling area. Late May
shouldn't be too crowded, there are several official camping possibilities
as well as some unofficial spots (harder to find but available).

The river Ticino Inferiore is leaving the Lago to the southeast until it
enters the river Po which is flowing into the Adria. The Ticino Inferiore is
supposed to be very nice, meandering through hilly landscape, lots of river
banks and wildlife. However, it has become protected area some years ago so
unofficial camping is not allowed. There are official camping spots, though.
Enough for about one week of paddling.

If you have a basic command of German, you might check the archives at
www.faltboot.de/dt/forum.html (select the "Suche"-Link, Suche = Search).
There was a longer thread on the Ticino Inferiore some weeks ago.

I am not aware of rental companies but there seem to exist a lot in Italy.

Good luck and happy caffè paddling,
Marian
