G'Day, This Easter saw me repairing and modifying a heap of gear after the summer seasons paddling and in preparation for winter and a sea proficiency test. I imagine paddling in winter in Sydney is much like paddling in winter in Florida. Most of the wear and tear was reasonable: new decals, gelcoat after a sad encounter with an oyster bed, towhooks, bungee lines for spare paddles (thanks to Doug Lloyd and Matt Broze web pages), paddle float support, padding out a helmet for the surf, and sewing up boots which had survived a minor shipwreck and scramble over rocks near Beecroft peninsula. But the repair which has caused me most frustration is to a Perception deck bag. Here is a product whose conceptual design is beautiful, but in the hands of a genteel paddler such as myself it has a tendency to fall apart. After a few hours in 2 to 3 foot surf two deck line clips ripped off in both mine and a friends bag. We replaced them with sister clips sewn on with sail twine via body harness straps, then after about a 100 hours use, which included a fair bit of rolling and reentry roll practise, the net in the corners started to come adrift and had to be reinforced with strapping. Now the net is coming away from the zip via stitching which does not seem to be reinforced. I think its repairable but only with considerable advice from my Mother in Law! Please does anyone know where to buy a really strong net/deck bag, preferably designed like the Perception bag but more robust?
