----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Schroeter" <kenschroeter_at_hotmail.com> > Did anyone see that new water-ski thingamabob in Canoe & Kayak? A "Personal > Ski Machine" called The Solo? From the bowels of High Impact Hell... I wrote that in our mag's Sea Kayak Dispatches but it had been mentioned in various forums prior to that. It is a strange machine that seems to be premised on some mistakened belief that the operator/skier lives on a planet devoid of other people and no one else is out there on the water. Kind of reminds me of one of the first dents my wife ever put on one of our earlier cars. She was up with friends on Deer Isle, ME and pulled into a spot in front of some shop. When they left, she went in reverse and smashed into a car behind her. Her comment was "It wasn't there when I pulled in." You have to understand that New Yorkers (my Canadian-transplanted wife has been long enough here to qualify as one of us) tend to forget themselves when they are far from civilization and think they are the only ones around. I suspect the operator of that Ski Machine may tend to think the same. > > And what's this about inland lakes and Marine VHFs not being compatible? I was surprised at that. While I don't expect the US Coast Guard is monitoring any channels, I would think that marinas, state and local marine enforcement agencies and motor boaters are using VHFs. But I don't know the locale, so I bow to Wes's assessment of that situation. ralph diaz-- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . .
