There is a gala Hudson River camping trip planned June 29th to July 7th to
celebrate the river, the Great Hudson River Paddle 145 miles long. It
differs from other such trips in that an effort will be made to really
connect with the towns along the way from Albany to NYC. This has
the flavor of the great yearly Danube trips organized for canoes and kayaks
for half a century by a group of German and other European clubs. Each
stopover will have local historians etc. come out for barbecues etc. and in
the mornings some special events will be planned. The trip is set to run
each afternoon putting in around noon or 1 pm. That is how the currents
break for a favorable ebb on the days of the trip. Because the way the
ocean currents work on a down river trip on the Hudson, each day we will be
able to start at the same time and face the exact same situation in terms of
currents (I will be glad to explain this for anyone who asks). Distances
are an average of 16 land miles a day. A lot of effort has gone into this
as you can see from the website http://www.greathudsonriverpaddle.net
and so there will be a cost to defray expenses. You can sign on as a
through-paddler, for a few days or a day. Please register if you intend to
come. Deadline is early June.

The amount of cooperation with communities along the way and the
generous support of paddlers and conservation and other organizations
is quite startling. Visit the website to sense just how much.

The last time I did the river, I was whizzing by at a 35 mile per day pace.
This will be a refreshing chance to really stop and smell the roses.
