Subject: [Paddlewise] Info on Green River Paddle

I'm thinking of doing the 120 mile paddle down the Green River in Utah
from the town Green River through Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons to
Spanish Bottom on the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park.
Snip>>>>>
Hi,
I've done the trip a couple of times. Be sure to allow plenty of time
for side hikes. There is an access at Mineral Bottom, and there might
be extra water left there, but don't bet on it. The Vaughn Bros at
Tex's usually have up-to-date info on conditions.

There are some intermittant springs, and seeps on the walls of
sandstone.
A plastic card or laminated map is handy for skimming water off walls.
Water can be filtered, but you have to let it settle overnight in a
folding bucket or whatever. Powdered alum will help it to settle
faster.

For reading, J.W. Powell's journals make good reading. There is a River
Museum in Green River, but it is slightly skewed by Bu-Rec propaganda,
IMHO.

Last trip we carried all water. You can throw a couple of extra MSR
10-ltr bags on the bottom of your kayak cockpit between your legs for
the first few days.
The ubiquitous Kelsey has written _River Guide to Canyonlands National
Park and Vicinity_ The park requires a permit that can be downloaded
and faxed back to them with fee by CC.
We used Tex's Riverways for shuttle to putin and boat trip back to their
place, where our cars were stored. They will rent toilets, but you must
make sure they have something to fit a kayak. Boomboxes are OK-must be
"Washable Reusable Toilet System" per regs-no bag systems are allowed.
Bugs can be a problem in years when higher flows have left side canyons
plugged with sandbars that can trap standing water.

If you want to take a glass boat, best to bring a bit of foam or carpet
for padding, both for the trailer ride to putin and on Jet Boat back.

Depending on river levels, some sandbar camps could be gone at higher
levels.
Once the Yampa drops, flows are dependent on Flaming Gorge Dam
releases.

If you have more time to spend in the area, you can run the cl-II
stretch on the Colorado above Moab, including the "Daily", or take the
float down from the Westwater takeout.

Have Fun!!
