One alternative is the Garmin 72, a scaled-down version of the 76. One
can't upload maps, but it has tide tables (for the USA and major world
cities) plus a few other such amenities. Same degree of waterproofness and
flotation. There's a gasket around the battery compartment but I haven't
fully trusted it yet. It runs about $160 US and the battery life is
surprisingly long. One useful feature of this and and several other
Garmins is that I can upload waypoints and tracks to other programs e.g.
TOPO! or OZIexplorer and superimpose them on topo maps or GIS layers...
