I think I can demonstate with wings better than with paddles.
Aspect ratio is the ratio of the length of the wing to the width
(distance from leading edge to trailing edge) of the wing. 
Examples of high a-r: the long thin wings of a high-performance 
sailplane or a U-2 or an albatross. Example of low a-r: the short
stubby wings of an F-104, a cruise missile, or of non-gliding birds 
like a hummingbird or a sparrow.
