Hi Ralph,

I chose the Speedtech knotmeter
(http://www.speedtech.com/products/knotmeters.asp), after paddling a number
of times with fellow list-member, Joe Sanford, who uses one. I chose a
knotmeter over a GPS as it provides very quick feedback, and also measures
speed through the water, rather than actual speed (e.g. paddling 5 knots
with a 3 knot current would read as five knots, not eight, as would a GPS).

They make two units for kayakers, SM-3A, that uses wireless transmission
(impeller is attached to the hull with adhesives), and SM-4A that has the
impeller at the end of a trailing wire. Although the wire unit is less
convenient, and poses a possible entanglement hazard, I chose it so that I
can use it on a variety of different kayaks easily.

I'm not much of a "gear head" but the knotmeter has been a great help with
evaluating forward stroke technique variations. I have no affiliation with
Speedtech.
