First on Yellowstone: The water is quite cold and prone to sudden
storms. Some detailed info is in: _Paddling Yellowstone and Grand Teton
National Parks_ by Don Nelson-Falcon Books 800-582-2665.

RE Flaming Gorge: You can put in upstream at one of the access points
and paddle down towards the dam. At low water there will be sandbars at
the upper end. The scenery gets better as you come down lake and
approach Red Canyon, which is partially submerged. A shuttle back from
Cedar Springs Boat Ramp can be done by calling Flaming Gorge Lodge, or
hitchiking.

The float below the dam is fine in plastic boats, rafts, or for skilled
canoeists, with some I-II rapids one II+ rapid at Red Creek that can be
portaged left. It is a cold water trout stream. Be sure to check flows
and lake levels at USGS and BU REC sites. Below Red Creek is more
pretty flat water floating through Swallow Canyon and Browns Park NW
Refuge.

There is lots of history here, including John Wesley Powell's trips, and
Browns Park with its outlaw lore. Powell's journals make good reading
while floating.
Below Browns Park, Gates of Lodore is permitted Cl II-III. You will
need a "washable reusable toilet system" for multi day trips.

A good map of Flaming Gorge and the river below is available from:
Fish-n_Map Co http://www.fishnmap.com/

I hope this helps
