Speaking of age, one of the highlights of my trip was the German-American
woman who sat next to me on the flight over to Munich.

I had my usual requested aisle seat and was sitting when the chief flight
steward came up escorting an elderly woman. I helped her get into her seat,
put her coat and packages in the overhead rack, etc. We started talking and
wound up doing so all night long. It turns out she was 92 years old. Had
left Germany in 1930 for some forgotten reason and never had returned. Her
husband had died two years ago and she wanted to see her old town, Augsburg
(just northeast of Munich), once more before she died.

Get this. She could hear perfectly without a hearing aid, even in a noisy
cabin. Her mind was clear as a bell and sharp in her observations and
statements (a bit confused, though, by planes as she had never flown before;
she thought that the pod at the end of the wing was another plane flying too
close). Later when we arrived at Munich I bidded her "aufwiedersehen"
thinking I would just rush off only to find that she was walking right
alongside keeping right up with me (and I'm a fast walker!).

I had earlier asked her what she thought was the secret of her long life and
she responded with one word "Port!" She drinks a glass everyday and did a
pretty good job on the wine and brandy Lufthansa serves.

As we finally parted, she told me to say to my wife that I had been picked
up on the flight by this gorgeous German woman. What a gal!

I think it is great. Wish I had that amount of experience...

Reminds me of when I was scouting Florida for a good place to live. I
spent a night in Naples. After dinner I was hanging out in the hotel
bar. By 10pm I was the only "kid" in the place (I was 48 at the time)
and spent the rest of the evening listening to the guys and their war
stories...World War I! It was an education. Needles to say I gave Naples
a miss. They say Florida is God's waiting room.

The operative word is "getting" old, Joe Sanford; essentially --- as we all hope to do, you are getting older: it doesn't sound like you "have gotten" old yet, which is completely different.

I had a favorite aunt who moved to a nursing home after a fall and a hip fracture at the age of 90. She virtually never left the home, but listened to the weather report each morning, and could provide a recap at any time of the day. She dressed for dinner each night --- a nicely coordinated outfit that she could have worn in the best restaurants in town. She was not old. She was getting older all the time, but she was never old.

Jack Martin, who is not getting younger ---

Sounds a bit like my grandfather. He's 95 and still drives into town
just about everyday. I've ridden with him and he drives better than
a lot of people I've ridden with. He also does all the maintenance on
the old diesel Mercedes he bought when he retired as a big truck diesel
mechanic 30 years ago. He's still sharp as a tack too.

BTW, Audrey Sutherland is 80 and still paddles a lot.

I read _Dr. Bob Arnot's Guide to Turning Back the Clock_ and he wrote of scientific studies where men who ate healthy and followed a regular exercise regimen had approximately the same measured biofeedback as men twenty years younger.
