Greetings!

I'm interested in hearing of suggestions/recommendations
for quality prescription sunglasses most suitable for
the needs of the demanding (and not so demanding!) sea
kayaker. Certainly, they need to be polarized to reduce
glare. But are there any particular manufacturers (e.g.,
Bole, Ray Ban, etc.) whose designs are exceptionally
effective for use on the water?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

Gary

My personal experience, after spending quite a few pesos on a pair of
polycarbonate lenses (useful as safety glasses in the shop) and durable
frames, is that sports type wrap around tend to fog badly. could be my
malformed face however. My oval wire rims do not experience this
problem at all. I hear there are coatings. The homespun dive trick for
masks does not seem to work.

Gary,
I have no experience with this outfit, but have saved the URL at the
recommendation of other paddlers. Try http://www.opticus.com, they have the
capabilities to do prescription, polarized sunglasses. Good luck,

             Dan Williams

Dear Gary,

I have heard that Costa del Mar are the absolute killer
shades for kayaking. Polarized, maximally scratchproof blue mirrored
glass might be the things for kayaking or ocean in general. Some
would use vermillion but I prefer a more natural color balance
http://www.eshades.com/ seems to be the best discounter, I am looking
at wavekiller or eliminator models myself.
http://www.costadelmar.com/ is the best place to go for technical
info. Costs $135 for no prescription for wavekiller. Use chums and
clip the back of the retainer to your vest or something. I've no
commercial affiliation to either entity. If you find somebody in
the Boston area who stocks this line let me know, I would pay $15
extra just to try the frames before I buy.

All the best,

Peter K

Are we talking "born with lousy eyes and they still suck" glasses or
"Born with great eyes, I'm over 40 and they suck" glasses?

If it's a case of needing near vision correction, I have found the
flexible plastic lenses available in various diopters from Walgreen's to
be pretty good. These are placed on the inside of a wet lens and adhere
once the water has dried. Thus, you are able to turn any brand of
sunglasses into a bifocal. The lenses are easily removable, yet they
stay attached during rolls. (I keep my sunglasses on during rolls. I use
only one of the two lenses on my non-dominant side.

The Great Mississippi River Race for Rett Syndrome is just about to
finish. Check out http://dreamkeeper.org/race_updates.html for
details. Due to the river being closed for several days they will not
break the record, but they are making good time.
