Hi,

Even with a GPS you still need a chart and a compass, not only to 
back up the GPS.
As far as position plotting on the chart goes, a very simple way 
was published in Sea Kayaker 's last issue (not the current one).  
A simple tool and a couple of waypoints stored in your GPS and 
marked on the chart are the only things you need to find your 
position on the map. I am not sure if that article is online, if not 
contact me and I will give you a detailed description of the 
procedure.
Another word to the Garmin eTrex, more exactly the whole family.  
There is now a whole bunch of eTrex models, all with different 
capabilities.  I still think that for seakayaking the old fashioned 
"yellow wonder" does the job. 
However, since electronic devices can fail, and according to 
Murphy they will just when you need them the most, old fashioned 
navigation skills are still desirable.
