I received a message from a fellow paddler on this subject with his observations: > I have the Maco saddles that Yakima sells. These have >a rough surface which rips off the gelcoat when going down a bumpy freeway. >I believe that Yakima is redoing that design. The saddles marred several of >my glass kayaks before I got wise and rubber cemented on some protective >closed cell foam. I cut the foam so that the soft part of the saddle (the >part in the middle) still comes up to hold the boat when you tighten the >straps. Maco/Yakima cost me some rough spots in my gelcoat. Glenn (Wildwater) Unlike Glenn I do not currently have a gelcoat boat. When I received my Yakima rack it had rubber pads which I removed to make it easier to slide my kayaks on the saddles. I assume these would be a good thing to have on for a gelcoat boat.
