As well as having been a market hunter in his native New Zealand, doing some
incredible and long distance sea kayaking expeditions in locations around
the world (including one that, at the time, was in the Guinness Book of
World Records as the longest ever--8000 miles, South America to Florida by
island hopping through the Caribbean with up to 80 mile long open water
crossings--where if they were swept too far off course by the wind and the
strong currents it was 500 miles of open water to Mexico--and the Ralph's
should like this--to make it even harder they did it in, gasp, folding
doubles;-), writing the first North American sea kayaking how-to book, "Sea
Kayaking", starting and editing Sea Kayaker magazine (actually, I think his
wife and paddling partner Bea Dowd did most of the real editing), starting
and running a retail sea kayaking store (Ecomarine Ocean Kayaks in
Vancouver, BC) and importing and wholesaling, I believe, Klepper and
Nautiraid kayaks, and then after retiring from both Sea Kayaker magazine and
Ecomarine, John Dowd has among other things also now written some children's
books. The only one I've seen and read so far was "Abalone Summer" an
adventure story for young folks that includes kayaking youngsters stumbling
on to a poaching ring while kayaking and then bringing them to justice.
