Ralph Diaz: The other Ralph is doing swim support tomorrow in a double foldable (a Pouch I assume) for the 20th swim circumnavigation of the island. Each swim has a kayaker(s) and a motorboat. Record time is in the 6 hr range for the 28 miles. >Is that right? I've often heard that a circumnavigation of Manhattan by kayak takes closer to 10 hours. Ulli Hoeger: In a Single or a Double? ;) Ralph Hoehn (in a double): Tom Dowling suffered through just a touch over twelve hours in the boat on this one (I have the advantage of having developed the appropriate callouses over the last 30 years and experienced considerably less pain ;-). Eric Blakely took an honorable last place in 9:46 h despite the lighting pauses. Helen Barker, his girlfriend, came in just before him. [For the record: They have both swum around the island of Jersey (Channel Islands) at least twice in 12-13 hours in much colder conditions thant the positively balmy 72F in New York Harbor waters last weekend.] A great event!! Thanks to Ralph Diaz (especially for the us of your cell phone, Tocayo!) and all the others who volunteered time and services and hung around for long hours both before and after the event! By the way: We propelled the folding double using 215 cm and 230 cm Greenland paddles (including the last 3/4 mile back to the boathouse in about 45 minutes against about 3.5 knots, according to one of the support motor boats GPS reading).
