I just finished putting primer on the bottom of my pygmy boats arctic tern and the first coat of varnish on the rest. I am now wondering if the primer/paint combo on the bottom will be worth all the extra effort (time, weight, money, etc)? As opposed to just throwing varnish on the whole thing? Any thoughts? The system three primer is thick, so I guess durability will be enhanced over varnish. but it will ad lots of weight and lots of time I could be out on the lake will be spent letting the stuff cure out. Heres the joke: Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too. ------------------------- Shawn Servoss Prineville, OR 97754 *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Depending on the high build primer you used, it could make it less durable. The stuff I used (Z-Spar) is thick but soft. I'm finishing a Chesapeake 18 and I used the primer on the sides but not the bottom for that reason. I used it on the sides because I care more about their appearance and it is less likely to hit the rock than the bottom. The argument about varnish versus paint for the bottom seems to have raged for some time. I decided to paint because when I put a ding in it. I can use body filler and then paint over it fairly easy. Fixing dings in bright is difficult. As I mentioned, there still seems to be a lot of people who argue each side. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it. ---Mark Twain ICQ#111665477 ------------------------------------------------------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shawn Servoss" <anomad_at_bendnet.com> To: <paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net> Sent: Saturday, June 02, 2001 5:49 PM Subject: [Paddlewise] question for boat builders and a corny joke > I just finished putting primer on the bottom of my pygmy boats arctic tern and > the first coat of varnish on the rest. Painting the bottom vs. leaving it bright (varnished) is a personal preference. I hope you haven't painted yet because you need to sand almost all of that primer off. Its purpose is to fill in any little scratches and not as a "first coat". If you don't sand the primer and then put on bottom paint it will chip easily. I used Interlux bright sides on my CLC Norhtbay when I first built it and last winter sanded it down and painted with Z-Spar poly paint and it seems to be much harder. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
