I'm going to be travelling in parts of the mid-west in July, and I'm looking for paddling suggestions and people to paddle with.

I definitely expect to be in northern Wisconsin the weekend of July 14-15, and hope to paddle in the Apostle Islands. Is anyone on the list familiar with the logistics of paddling there? I think I'll have my own boat with me, but I'm not sure - depends on how many toys I can bring in or on my car for this trip. I don't think I'll have gear for kayak camping - is it practical to car camp and paddle in the islands, or are the distances too great from the mainland? In case I don't have my boat, does anyone know of places to rent one? If anyone is interested in meeting up to paddle for a day or two (or if you have a spare boat), please do email me.

I'll be travelling from northern Michigan (yup, Betsie Bay) back to Washington DC after July 17 - that means Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and home. Does anyone know about paddling on the s. west end of Lake Erie - the Ohio shoreline? What about the Lake Erie Islands State Parks? (John Baughman, are you still in Ohio somewhere? We haven't seen you at any CPA events in ages, I don't think!) After Michigan I should definitely have my own boat (barring disasters at Betsie Bay).

I'd be glad to get suggestions from anyone with information to offer. Off line is fine, unless you think everyone else is interested as well.

One of the best organized symposia I've ever attended, Joy, was the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Club annual in July in Grand Marais, on the UP of Michigan. Checked that the web site was working <http://www.glskc.org> and it's working, but it lists the 16th symposium for 20-23 July 2000 as the one yet to be. The UP is a special place, but not that special. If you work the site or look at it at a reasonable hour (study break!!!), or if you call Larry Merx, maybe you'll get better gouge. It's a wonderful weekend, although I had to pitch my three season tent between two monster RVs --- busses, they were --- with generators and air conditioners and TVs all night. (Find a nice motel.)

Good luck --- your timing might be excellent.

Jack Martin --- back to enterprise vortals...
