Thanks Steve, I spend most of my time near harbours or within a km of small
fishing boats where flares do tend to get seen. Might try mirrors again
also.
Wayne's pistol flare sounds ideal in terms of speed and simplicity of use.
Do you know the brand name or supplier?

Thanks David, I've been carrying dye which I got from a kayak shop - didn't
think of trying the local plumber - sounds a bit cheaper!

experimenting in my bathroom:~)
