[Paddlewise] Steering is a Drag

Does any boat really track staight in demanding conditions with only
"slight edging?" Many of us who learned to paddle without tracking aids
don't realize how much effort we put into steering. I was amazed at the
increase in speed I gained when I added a long, thin integral skeg to one
of my boats; I was forced to abandon my purist position when I recognized
that most of my former paddle-steering & edging energy were being
redirected into additional forward propulsion.

"Edging" also uses its own form of drag to help steer the boat; it may not
be any more "efficient" than a rudder or skeg.

Dragged out of lurking again,
