The 2 rowing the American entry are both paddlers who fairly recently took up rowing, maybe 3 years ago.

Tom Mailhot is sea kayaker. He was with the owner of feathercraft for his paddle around Cape Horn. Tom also did a stint paddling a triple in Alaska, I think with project sea wolf. Ron Zeigler is a former canoe racer. I don't believe they had met each other before deciding to do the rowing race.

I believe the American Star is the second iteration of the boat they are racing. According to a radio interview I heard (NPR's Only a Game) they determined the first American Star was unseaworthy. Better to learn that in practice, and not half way across the atlantic. Also in that story was the comment that no contact with the outside world is allowed during the race. Which I think is nutty. I would want weather reports...

One of the American Stars (don't know if it was the original or the replacement) had 300 pounds of lead ballast. It also has a 24 foot "wingspan" for the oars, from blade tip to blade tip.

The Atlantic Rowing Challenge is a one-design race. Tom Mailhot and
John Zeigler <http://usrowboys.com/> have built two of the boats.
Actually they hired someone to build the first one and he botched the
job so Tom and John built the second one themselves. They have been
rowing the boat in several local races this year as training and for
publicity. They have had difficulty raising money to fit out the boat
completely. I hope they got everything done before they sent the boat
to Tenerife about a month ago...

The race is specifically planned to occur at the tail end of
hurricane season in the hopes that they will get favorable winds. I
hope they aren't too favorable.

www.telecomchallenge.co.nz/v2page.html

This is the page about the New Zealand entry. Looks like the previous
winner won't be able to row due to injury - typical NZer doing peace
keeping duty.....

His rowing mate from the first race died in a plane crash.

Note also there are 2 NZ crews and boats.

The US entry - don't know how it would be possible to put together one of
those boats in such a way that it couldn't be used - maybe they should have
found a wooden kayak builder to do it for them.

They hired a well respected wooden boat builder in the area (this
area of the states has lots). Even though the kit is fairly brainless
to put together, he somehow assembled it with a severe twist. He made
the finished product straight with liberal use of filler. This made
the boat heavier and less efficiently shaped. I would think the
result would have been serviceable, but Tom and John didn't like the
idea of rowing a defective boat all the way across the Atlantic so
they opted to build a new one.

Severe twist!!! Presumably now a LESS well respected builder? As any kayak
builder knows, getting it straight is the name of the game and S&T usually
"falls" into place.

Yea, the builder must have assumed it would just fall into place and
didn't bother to check before gluing everything together. No matter
how easy the project appears, you do at least want to double check.
He didn't until it was too late.

OK, it isn't paddling but it is using "paddles" even if they do sit facing
the wrong way!!!!!

The Ward Evans Atlantic Challenge with was mentioned on this group a little
while ago.

FIRST - New Zealand after 41 days rowing, unfortunately not quite breaking
the record.

Second Australia, 3 days later.

Third - Belgium.

4th - New Zealand (51 days) the womens' team, 4th out of 35 teams. Maybe
they had an advantage, the boat knew the way having been the winning boat
last time.
.
.
.
USA????? about 25 days still to go when the women finished.

The USA entrants have been paddlers for years. So I, for one, appreciate the update.

The USA team finished 11th on Dec 4. 9 days after the New Zealand ladies.

The winning team was 3 days up on second, 7 days up on third.
