I don't think you can generate enough pressure to overcome the osmotic
pressure of the sea water by this method. Depending on the type of membrane
being used, commercial units need to be operated at anywhere from 200 PSI to
400 PSI. That is why there is so much energy required to produce potable
water.

This is not the same as trying to pump water through an ordinary filter. You
are trying to filter at the ionic level (smaller than molecules).

If you were to try and do this by foot while paddling, I don't think there
would be any energy left to move the paddle. As Arthur Hebert found out,
this method could allow you to survive, but it certainly would be very
difficult to produce another water for drinking, cooking, etc.

Just my 2 cents as someone with almost 30 years experience providing
industrial water treatment.
