One of the things I like best about PaddleWise is the variety of trip reports that come in from all around the world. I'm always searching for new trip ideas and trip reports with pictures provide a great way to select the next trip. This last weekend there was a 15 mile kayak race as part of the Lone Star Legacy Weekend at the Lighthouse Lakes Trail in Redfish Bay. The race from Rockport TX to the Lighthouse Trails was put together by the Rockport Parks and Recreation and the Texas Parks and Wildlife people. There were prticipants from all around the U.S., including large 6 man outriggers that came in from California. After all the dust (waves) cleared, I came in #4 paddling my new 19' KajakSport Vivian. Did the 15 miles in 2 hours 20 min for an average speed of 6.5 mph. This was my first race, and the KajakSport people tell me that the average speed for people racing that kayak range from 6 to 8 mph (statute miles). The first two places were won by racing kayaks, and the one regular kayak ahead of me was a QCC700. Don't know which boat was really faster, since I am 69 and the other kayak racer was much younger. Bob Griebel, who has put up a great Dallas/Ft. Worth kayaking home page, put together a supurb trip report with pictures covering this race event. He also has covered about ten other trips that he or the Dallas/Ft. Worth kayaking group have sponsored. His reports can be seen at http://community.webshots.com/user/dfwseayaker . He documented a great trip to three waterfalls in a very remote area of central Texas where the Little Colorado River flows into Lake Buchanan. That is one of my favorite places to kayak. Are there any other lurkers who have put together trip reports with pictures that we haven't seen and don't know about? Mine can be found at http://community.webshots.com/user/johnsonkw1One of the best sources I have found for perhaps a hundred trip reports is paddling.net's "Places2paddle" at http://www.paddling.net/places/. These are a real asset in my trip planning each year.
