They may have been carbon, not alkalines for 24 for $7.

BTW I just received my Techna 3 C cell 7 LED flash light and I am really
impressed. I paid $32 for it on the net and it is extremely bright with
a 40 hour battery life. It doesn't have a long focused beam like a
halogen but it throws a very even white blue-white light ideal for most
kayaking and camping situations. An added benefit is that the light is
very distinctive and would attract attention when used for signaling.

The light appears to be made like their dive lights, designed for the
SEALs with a typical dive light wrist strap and waterproof to well below
where you'd ever go.

When I first posted my white LED flashlight experiments on Paddlewise a
few years ago, these white LEDs were almost $10 direct from the
manufacturer, Nichea. This light comes with 7 LEDs, 3 C cells and a
strap for $32!
