My experience with using both the red/green running lights and the high white all-around light on sea kayaks is that this works very nicely for the other folks in your trip to know which direction you are headed in. For about $10 at a local sporting goods store (Academy), I purchased a single bulb flashlight with a colored lens on it that is half green; half red. Have to do some finagling with it to make it adaptable to attaching to the front of the kayak, but has worked quite nicely. Powered by 2 D batteries (or C?). A finagle (high tech term, huh?) that seems to work well is attaching the flashlight to a slightly raised platform (e.g., closed cell foam) to keep it out of direct wash of waves on the deck, attached to a piece of rubber big enough to go beyond the straps that hold the front hatch cover in place. Wouldn't do in high seas, but works well for night paddling around Houston and Galveston Bay.
