Have you seen my LED page:

www.flinet.com/gulfstream/paddle.html

The issue with Red/ Green lights is that as I understand it, per CG
rules, a kayak should be marked with a steady white light. The reason
one has a red/green light on boats and planes is to be able to identify
their direction relative to the viewer. Kayaks are too narrow to make
that practical and pose no threat of collision due to the slow speed
most of us can achieve.

Cya!

Say Bob, have you ever had any thoughts about building an LED
red/green/white marker light system for kayaks?

Winter looms and thoughts of winter projects are settling in.

few years ago, these white LEDs were almost $10 direct from the
manufacturer, Nichea. This light comes with 7 LEDs, 3 C cells and a
strap for $32!

Hi Bob,

I don't know that kayaks are necessarily too narrow to make it
practical, since there are combo red/green lights for small skiffs and
runabouts that don't present much color spread.

My rationale wasn't so much for the ability of other boats to gauge our
direction or speed, but merely to identify us as boats, and
differentiate us from background lights that are often un-moving. (A
single white light on a kayak doesn't move too much over a short period
of time, and could easily be confused...)

I have your LED page bookmarked--very nice! Your comment about the new
3-cell LED flashlight spurred a thought that's been churning in the
after recesses of my brain...

Safe paddling,
Shawn

I believe the reason motorized craft are marked is to clearly indicate
threat and direction of travel to other boaters. Any light on the water
should be a cause for concern to any boater. I've seen the lights you
refer to and they make sense for a motorized craft. There may be some
rational for trying to determine if a kayak is coming at you or heading
away, but at the distance you could tell, it is easier to just ask?

I have just ordered a 9v 3 LED light as well.

See http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/zone.htm for up-to-date reviews of many
LED lighting products, including some that haven't been released yet --
among them a new Arc flashlight using a new LED that makes it as bright as
an ordinary flashlight. Also reviewed are LED replacement bulbs for 12V
running lights and Minimags.

Every time I buy a new LED flashlight, I find it's just become obsolete.
