I am a newcomer to this particular group, and I am impressed by the
breadth and depth of experience that my original query has exposed. In this
climate we need at least four litres of water a day. Using the commercially
available PUR machines the amount of time and effort it would take to
produce this much water would be unacceptable. Like Arthur Hebert, I'd like
to either go electric, but realistically for the near future I'll be
carrying the supply from shore.
Bill Mason the quintessential Canadian paddler once wrote that he'd
never paddle on anything he couldn't drink, and the only coastal paddling he
did was on the Great Lakes. Not that Lake Ontario would be so safe to drink,
its certainly less salty than the Persian Gulf
The one opinion I would like to hear is from Peter Bray. He recently
finished an unsupported kayak crossing of the North Atlantic from
Newfoundland to Ireland and must have desalinated water somehow. It's
probably a bit soon to expect him to be answering e-mail questions yet.
