To add to Steve's advice about Bull's Island, I've paddled there a couple times and highly recommend it for a daytrip combining a paddle and a hike. I've put up a picture album of my recent trip at http://community.webshots.com/album/20004800SBtZkqeUlJ The ghost forest is on the Atlantic beach at the north end. Paddle from Moore's landing. You can't stay overnight on the island. Definitely heed Steve's advice about tides. The ferry channel heads east from the Intercoastal Waterway just north of Moore's Landing. Follow the ferry's channel markers to and from the island, religiously if the tide isn't high. Note the tower on the mainland behind you before start out so you know where you're headed back to when you're in the "trenches" of the channels through the marsh grass at low tide. You're sure to find dolphins feeding there. If you're lucky, you'll find dolphins in Bulls Creek who learned to herd mullet onto the mud bank and then leap up on the bank to grab them. Allow 90 minutes each way. Resist the urge to shortcut across that open bay if the tide isn't high; I know someone who dragged his kayak across mud flats in January and I've nearly been there myself. If I haven't caused you too much anxiety about how to get back alive, enjoy it. It's doable enough and it's lovely place that reminds me of Cumberland Island. BTW, closer to Charleston is the Stono River from James Island County Park or other roads going south from Folly Road on James Island. Or take Folly road out to the bridge by Oak Island about 2 miles short of the beach and paddle the channels in the low country from there, especially toward King Flats Creek.
