[Paddlewise] waves and rocks

Hello,
         Can anyone tell me how to measure ocean wave height?
I read about collecting Canadian Ballast Rocks.  What size, shape, weight, 
etc. is considered a good ballast rock?  Don't the rocks cause some damage 
to a kayak unless they are tied down someway?
