SNIP >I certainly wouldn't mind having these kind of information >through PaddleWise! But I do not understand the need for >mailinglists like 'JustCanoes' or 'Greenland-style Kayaking'. SNIP Dirk, I would certainly welcome more discussion of "Greenland-style" and "traditional" kayaking on this list as well. The main incentive for creating a forum devoted to this community was due to the low number of threads appearing on Paddlewise, and similar lists. So far, during its first week, participation on the Greenland Forum has been very vigorous. While a general list is wonderful for its wide variety of subject matter, sometimes participation by a specific community is greatly enhanced when folks have a place where they can discuss non-mainstream issues in depth, and contribute with the assurance that they are more likely to obtain a meaningful response. Another factor is that members can post with less worry that their contribution is going to bore, or appear off-topic to the vast majority of a larger, more diverse audience. For example, I would never consider posting about Inuit rope-gymnastics or harpoon-throwing to this list, while it would be perfectly acceptable fare to the "Greenland" forum.
