From the Boston Globe, 12 Nov. 2001 p. B2 Canoe tragedy claims Brockton man A Saturday night canoe ride with friends ended in tragedy when police yesterday pulled the body of a 23-year-old Brockton man from Whitmans Pond. Thom Madjerec drowned after the canoe he was riding in with two friends at about 9 PM capsized. [Friends rescued, survived.]... ... overturned about 50 feet offshore ... none was wearing a life jacket, a violation of state law ... water about 10 feet deep ... air temperature was 44 degrees and the water temperature was probably around 30 degrees ... hypothermia might have been a factor ... second [death] in six months at Whitmans Pond. ... The owner of the canoe will be cited for a misdemeanor violation. "Had they worn life jackets, this probably wouldn't have been fatal."... This happens far too often here in New England. -Gerald Hawkins. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
