Fellow Paddlers, Most of you who have who have journeyed to Cumberland Island have been smitten by its charms. Those of you who have not deserve the chance to be. Cumberland NWA is the southern most barrier island on the GA coast and one of the best examples of a temperate maritime forest anywhere. The island is resplendent with live oaks hung with garlands or Spanish moss with a largely palmetto palm undergrowth. One can observe over 200 species of birds, wild horses, a host of other animals and walk wide beaches where the shelling is great and no other people as far as the eye can see. This isn't everyone's idea of nirvana but it sure blows our club's doors off. The reason for this post is to call the paddling community's attention to an imminent decision by the National Park Service based on a 600 page tomb known as the Wilderness Management Plan that will render kayak camping from the best take out on this island "impractical" What I mean by that is: Brickhill Bluff CG is scheduled to be moved from "make landfall & pitch your tent heave a sigh and go exploring" to "make landfall and portage your gear/boat a considerable distance heave a REALLY BIG sigh and collapse" Then of course you get to do the same on the way back which could cause you to miss the tide. You don't want to go there (don't ask me how I know). At this point I think the battle I would pick is not weather to move the CG but rather the minimum distance to allow the denizens of the NPS to "comply" and not lose face.
