Re: [Paddlewise] Sloping sea illusion?

I'm glad you asked this question. I have paddled 3000nm+ but only
experienced the sensation you describe on one occasion. A companion and I
were paddling the Calfiornia coast off Ano Nuevo. The sea seemed to evacuate
a deep hole near shore that remained a depression for an uncanny period. I
was looking down into it. The entire ocean seemed to tilt. Finally the sea
began to swirl its way back into the hole which seemed to fill reluctantly.

After landing my friend told me he had experienced a strange confusion in
his equilibrium in the same area. I suspect the effect is produced by a
peculiar bathymetry in conjunction with the tidal stage. We were in a bit of
weather and the storm surge may also have been a factor.
