Hi Jochen and Mary and others interested in the topic:

I agree with the points Jochen makes about the utility of radar reflectors
on kayaks. In anticipation of a long crossing I too have researched this
safety issue and came to the conclusion that it is more important that YOU
THE KAYAKER are aware of radar-operating craft in your vicinity.
Just because a vessel is operating radar in your area, it does not mean
that even if your kayak somehow shows up on the screen, that a crew member
will even respond to the contact.
Recent fatalities in our part of the world have occurred with large
vessels operating radars but still running down a yacht, and a fishing
vessel, both at night, with crews below decks. Scary.
If this is a serious issue with you, I suggest taking a look at :

	http://www.survivalsafety.com/c_a_r_d.htm

This device has been used on ocean crossings on kayak-type craft, but I
note it does require 12v power. But the great advantage is that you have
the initiative in the possible collision. And the device gives you time to
avoid being run down. But given the expense of the system, and problems
associated with waterproofing it, this would only be viable at an
expedition level of kayaking.

	Cheers, Peter Rattenbury
