I've been paddling the Swedish Coast last year, and once I got over the enourmous amounts of jellyfish, it was so incredibly beautiful... Already I am longing to go back there next summer. Just 9 more months to wait... Can anybody tell me if these amounts of jellyfish stick to a specific season? Would it help to go there in june instead of july, or even earlier in the season? No, I don't think they arrive in spesific months, but they arrive in summer. They are moved in a high degree by currents, which in this part of Scandinavia mostly are set up by meteorological phenomena; the amount, strength and direction of wind. The tidal range is very small south and east of Stavanger. I think the amount of jellyfish also have a lot to do with watertemperature during autumn, winter and spring, the salinity in the water and the amount of nutrition they get. You can meet them among the outer islands, and in the innermost of the fjords. Last year incredible amounts of jellyfish "surfaced" in Indre Oslofjord in august/september, and to paddle through them was a bit annoying: It felt like kayaking in marmalade. This year (2001) they didn't come so "far inland" in those incredible quantities, even if the summer was rainy, windy and mainly cold, like the summer 2000.
